Government Services for Entrepreneurs
If you operate a pet establishment in New Brunswick (an animal shelter, a pet retail store or a kennel), you are required to obtain a licence under the new Pet Establishment Regulation that came into effect on June 1, 2010.
Minimum standards of animal care have been established for pet retail stores and animal shelters covering such areas as feeding and watering, handling, veterinary care, ventilation and sanitation. Kennels that house dogs must be maintained and operated in accordance with the Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations.
The new Regulation is overseen and enforced by the New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Call the SPCA toll-free at 1-877-722-1522 for more information about licensing requirements.

These laws should apply to on-line pet stores where animals really suffer. At a pet store retailer, at least you see the animals in their environment. With on-line pet stores, I am shocked by the abuse. On-line pet stores should have strict laws apply to them. Not so much to the retailers who have the dogs in plain view. At least at a pet store, the animals have regular check up. No so is the case for on-line pet stores.

I wonder why they just have this in New Brunswick? This should be in all provinces, Quebec in particular.

Hello JB,
Each province and territory has its own rules and regulations for operators of pet stores, animal shelters, and kennels.
The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies has information about provincial and territorial animal protection laws.
You can contact the Humane Society of Canada for information about the specific rules and regulations in your province or territory. You may also be interested in the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations.
