E-business and selling to non-Ontario customers

If your business sells products or services through the internet, you will probably need to deal with customers in a variety of jurisdictions outside of Ontario.

The Ministry or agency responsible for administering sales tax in the jurisdiction where the customer lives can confirm the requirements for charging its sales tax. Make sure to contact this authority for details and requirements.

Your business should also be aware of other regulations outside of Ontario that can apply to non-Ontario sales. Examples of regulations can include business name registration, taxation, consumer protection, deceptive advertising, import/exporting, product safety, product labelling, product standards, inter-provincial or international trade treaties, and intellectual property.

To avoid regulatory problems, make sure to contact the regulatory authorities in the province or territory where you are selling products or services.
