How to Register your Business Name (Ontario)

Government of Ontario - Ministry of Government Services

Applies to: Ontario

Do you want to use a business name that differs from your full name or the name of your corporation? Then, you will need to register that business name. This type of business name is also known as "operating as" or "trade name". You can complete an optional name search and register your business:

  • through ServiceOntario's website;
  • in person at a ServiceOntario centre; or
  • by mailing an application to the address indicated on the form.

The cost to register your business ranges from $60 to $80. Your registration is valid for five years at which time it must be renewed.

Note: Registering your business does not protect the exclusivity of your business name. You may be able to protect your business name by registering a trademark under the Trade-Marks Act (federal legislation).
