How to Register your Business Name (Ontario)

Government of Ontario - Ministry of Government Services

Applies to: Ontario

Do you want to use a business name that differs from your full name or the name of your corporation? Then, you will need to register that business name. You can complete a name search and register your business:

  • through ServiceOntario's website
  • in-person at a ServiceOntario centre
  • by mailing an application form to the address indicated on the form

The cost to register your business ranges from $60 to $80. Your registration is valid for five years, at which time it must be renewed.

Registering your business does not protect the exclusivity of your business name. You may be able to protect your business name by registering a trade-mark under the Trade-Marks Act (federal legislation).
